New Kid

Hello! I'm Jay, and I'm a culinary student (focusing on baking & pastry) in Columbia, MD. Currently in my second semester, already looking for my next program to transfer to. I've only had dishwashing experience in commercial kitchens, but I cook a fair bit at home, and love baking. (even though I don't do enough of it yet) My goal is to open my own bakery at some point, doing custom cakes and certain pastries. I don't have much graphic artistic skill, so I'll be taking various art classes alongside my regular culinary classes to help me come along in that regard.

Nice to be here!

Time to head to class. :)

Welcome aboard!

Where are you studying? My goal is to eventually open a late night cafe serving good coffee and comfort-type food in "just enough" portion sizes.

I start at the Art Institute of California-San Diego in 2 weeks and I am so excited!

I'm enrolled in the culinary program at Howard Community College in Columbia, MD. They don't have a dedicated baking & pastry program like I was told that they did when I signed up, so I'm planning on transferring as soon as I'm able to - where, I'm not sure yet. My fiancee and I eventually hope to end up out west somewhere, so I'm currently looking into schools in the AZ area.

Comfort food is great - I'm a big fan of "home food" type stuff, whether it's deserts or otherwise. Good luck!

If you end up in WA at all Renton Tech in Seattle has a program that is specific to pastry and baking, it takes a year. I'm currently doing it and it is a pretty good program.

Cookery is not chemistry. It is an art.
